Leading with Purpose: Celebrating Leadership Guided by Experience and Grounded in Community

At YouthLink, we believe that leadership should reflect the communities we serve. As a Black-led, youth-centered organization, our commitment to equity isn’t just a value—it’s a lived practice. With 93% of the youth who come through our doors identifying as BIPOC, it matters deeply that our leadership understands their journeys firsthand.

Our CEO, Rich Melzer, and our Senior Director of Programs, Shennika Sudduth, bring more than professional experience to their roles—they bring perspective, empathy, and a deep, personal commitment to youth voice and community empowerment. Their leadership is not only transforming YouthLink internally, but also being recognized on a public stage.

In back-to-back years, Rich and Shennika were both honored with the L’Étoile Du Nord (Star of the North) Award at Allianz Field—presented by Target and Minnesota United FC (MNUFC) to community leaders who embody the values of resilience, inclusivity, passion, and teamwork. Shennika received the award in July 2024, and Rich followed in May 2025. For us, these honors aren’t just moments of celebration—they’re affirmations that our mission is being seen, and that our model of community-led, youth-first leadership matters.

Together, Rich and Shennika have ushered in a period of bold growth at YouthLink. Under their guidance, we’ve:

  • Doubled the number of youth served and visits in just three years
  • Supported over 2,500 youth during 18,000+ visits last year alone
  • Maintained a 90% housing retention rate at 12 months
  • Expanded our career and education program to strengthen long-term stability

Rich, a lifelong advocate for youth and underserved communities, has championed innovative, inclusive strategies that break down systemic barriers. His leadership is rooted in collaboration, coalition-building, and creating pathways to opportunity that empower young people and revitalize communities.

Shennika, whose work is grounded in the Nine Guiding Principles that shape every aspect of YouthLink’s programs, is relentless in her drive to build systems that are trauma-informed, non-judgmental, and deeply supportive. She ensures our services are not only accessible but also affirming—spaces where youth and staff alike feel safe, respected, and seen.

What makes their leadership exceptional isn’t just the programs they’ve built or the awards they’ve earned—it’s the shared values they bring to this work: a belief in the brilliance of youth, a commitment to equity, and a passion for community transformation.

Their recognition as Stars of the North shines a light on the heart of YouthLink: a team grounded in lived experience, leading with integrity, and working every day to ensure young people experiencing homelessness have access to safety, opportunity, and hope.

Thank you to our supporters, donors, and partners who make this work possible. You are helping us ensure that every young person—no matter their background—has access to safety, opportunity, and a future filled with hope.
