Building Trust and Community: Inside the World of YouthLink’s Outreach Case Manager

Enter Kiki’s office – not an office with four walls, but the vibrant city landscape where compassion meets community, and every step is a journey toward making a difference in the lives of youth experiencing homelessness. Armed with kindness, resources, and an unwavering dedication to her work, Kiki’s efforts extend far beyond the boundaries of a conventional job description.

As YouthLink’s Outreach Case Manager, Kiki’s role transcends even traditional case manager roles, weaving connections and support networks directly in community, where they are often most needed. Donned in her unmistakable YouthLink blue, Kiki ventures into areas frequented by youth experiencing homelessness, equipped not just with supplies but with an acute awareness of her surroundings, an ability to adapt to a wide variety of situations, and a genuine desire to make connections and engage with people facing challenges that are difficult to navigate even for the most resilient among us.

As she walks the streets, Kiki distributes essential items and basic needs like hot meals, snack kits, water bottles, and hygiene packs. In the winter months, she adds blankets, hand warmers, hats, gloves, and other cold weather gear to her arsenal, providing warmth and comfort to those facing harsh Minnesota winters. Yet, her outreach extends beyond tangible items; Kiki also offers vital connections to resources, ensuring that every encounter is an opportunity for support and empowerment. Equipped with an iPad, she assists youth in filling out vital documentation paperwork and facilitates access to the myriad of services available at YouthLink’s Drop-In Center. Each card she hands out is not just a piece of paper, but a lifeline to a place and a community where young people are seen, heard, and valued—where they can access what they need to survive and thrive without facing the barriers they may face elsewhere.

Outreach, as Kiki describes it, is about meeting people where they are, both physically and emotionally. Outreach isn’t just about delivering supplies and services; it’s about being a familiar face, a trusted adult, in the lives of youth experiencing homelessness. For Kiki, it’s about showing up authentically, respecting people’s lived experiences, and offering support without judgment.

Though outreach work may seem daunting to some, for Kiki, it’s a calling she wholeheartedly embraces. As she emphatically states, “There’s never been a time I didn’t feel comfortable doing outreach because I love it. I’m passionate about helping people and I think that’s why I am here at YouthLink in the first place.” Her passion for helping others shines through in every interaction, driving her unwavering commitment to serving the community. But what truly sets Kiki apart is not just her unique role at YouthLink, but her lived experience. Growing up in environments resembling those she now works in, she exudes an authenticity and empathy that goes beyond words. Her ability to forge deep connections with youth stems from a shared understanding and a heartfelt desire to meaningfully engage based on shared experiences and the personal knowledge that homelessness is not a final destination.

At the heart of Kiki’s work lies YouthLink, a community that embraces diversity, inclusivity, and adaptability. Kiki agrees when she states, “This is hands down the best team I’ve ever been a part of. YouthLink not only helps me excel in my role but also allows me to be my authentic self without any hesitation. They bring out the best in me naturally, and that’s something I’ve never experienced elsewhere.” At YouthLink, Kiki feels empowered to be her authentic self, surrounded by a supportive team that values her input and ideas.

Through her efforts, Kiki not only provides immediate, tangible support but also bridges the gap between unsheltered youth and the resources available at YouthLink. As Kiki puts it, “You know, when I’m out there rocking my blue YouthLink gear, it’s like a signal to them. They see me coming, and they know what I’m about. They know I’m coming with resources. It’s not just about them recognizing YouthLink as a place; it’s about them realizing there’s a whole YouthLink connection ready to roll with them, wherever they are.”

Her presence is a reminder that they are not alone and that there are resources and support available to them.

Yet, amidst the victories and the moments of joy, Kiki also sheds light on the stark realities of homelessness. She emphasizes the strength and resilience exhibited by individuals living on the streets, highlighting the importance of recognizing their humanity and inherent worth.

In a world where basic necessities are often taken for granted, Kiki’s work serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of small acts of kindness. A simple snack bag or a warm blanket can brighten someone’s day and serve as a reminder of a community ready to embrace them.

As Kiki continues her outreach work, she hopes to inspire others to see youth experiencing homelessness not as statistics, but as individuals with unique stories and potential. Through her unwavering dedication and commitment to building trust and community, Kiki embodies the spirit of YouthLink’s mission – to empower and uplift youth, one connection at a time.
